Gutters and siding installation

Gutters and siding installed with the roof, so water leaves the eave cleanly and the roof-to-wall flashing is tied in.

Chapter 01

Why gutters are a roof job

Most roofers treat gutters as somebody else's problem. We don't, because the gutter line is where the roof's work ends. Water that sheets off the shingles has to land in something and go somewhere. When a gutter is pitched wrong, undersized or pulling away from the fascia, water spills over the edge, runs down the wall and pools at the foundation, and on a Michigan house it freezes at the eave and feeds ice dams that push meltwater back up under the shingles.

That is why gutters belong on a roofing estimate. A new roof over a failing gutter line can start giving out at the edge, with the cause sitting in the one place nobody looked. When we inspect a Detroit house for a roof, we look at the fascia, the drip edge and the downspouts at the same time, so the roof and the path the water takes are planned together instead of argued over later.

Gutters and siding put in with the roof

Done in sequence, the details line up. Drip edge is set so water kicks into the gutter instead of behind it. Downspouts land where water can leave the house, away from the foundation and off any walkway that ices over. Where the roof meets a wall, flashing is tied in behind the siding, not smeared over with caulk, so the spot where water most often gets into a Detroit house is closed properly.

Siding follows the same logic. Replacing siding next to a new roof means the wall flashing and the shingles go in as one system, by the same people, instead of two trades pointing at each other when a stain shows up. Ask for gutters and siding on the same written estimate as the roof and the pieces are scoped and scheduled together, for homes in Detroit, Dearborn, Livonia, Warren and the towns around them.

Chapter 03

One crew, one estimate, one cleanup

Hiring a roofer, a gutter company and a siding crew means three schedules and three sets of ladders across the same lawn. We keep it to one: one free written estimate, one crew, and one cleanup at the end, with a magnet sweep for nails along the beds and the driveway. The estimate names the materials, so you can see what is going on your house before it goes on, and we will beat any written estimate from a licensed and insured roofer.

T&M Roofing is family- and veteran-owned, run by Ted Thompson, a US Army veteran of Desert Storm. We work under Michigan licence #262400794, fully licensed and insured, and our 10-year labor warranty stands behind the labor. A home in Grosse Pointe or Canton gets the same free inspection as a Detroit address, and seniors, veterans and first responders get a discount.

What the written estimate covers

Free, in writing, signed before work starts. It sits on the same sheet as the roof replacement when the two go together.

  • The gutter line

Which eaves get gutters, the size and material, and where every downspout lands and drains.

  • The siding

Which walls are being re-sided, the material, and how it ties in at the roof-to-wall flashing.

  • The roof edge

Drip edge, fascia checks and any roofing the gutter and siding job touches, on the same sheet.

  • Cleanup and warranty

Magnet sweep, haul-away, and our 10-year labor warranty, in writing.
